Step 1: Measure Your Space Accurately

  1. Start at one corner of the longest wall and go clockwise around the perimeter, writing down each wall run.
  2. Mark every door and window: its position along the wall and its width. Measure the opening, not the frame.
  3. Note fixed obstacles — radiators, columns, the boiler you cannot move.
  4. Close the loop. Add opposite walls and check the totals match. If your north wall reads 4.2 m and your south wall reads 3.9 m, one of them is wrong. Find it now, not after the furniture arrives.

Worked Example: A 4.2 m Wall at 1:50

  • Real size in cm: 4.2 m = 420 cm
  • Divide by the factor: 420 ÷ 50 = 8.4 cm on paper

A 90 cm doorway at 1:50? 90 ÷ 50 = 1.8 cm. Do this for every run once, write the paper measurement lightly in pencil, and the drawing practically assembles itself.
